Recommended Transition Paths for the New Mobile App

Next week, our brand new mobile app will be available in the Google Play and Apple App stores! Starting August 20, you can find it by searching SafetyChain App in both stores (to avoid confusion with a few similarly named apps on the market, we have officially dropped the M3 moniker). Please note that the Aug. 20 date is subject to change — the current date is an estimate based on the length of Apple’s typical review process. Once the app is live, we will post another communication here to confirm its availability.

To ensure you hit the ground running, we have mapped out two recommended transition paths you can adapt based on you and your organization’s approach to change management. Read on for those transition timelines plus a reminder of key dates and a brand new FAQ!

Whether You're a Tortoise or a Hare, We’ve Got Your Transition Covered!

Customers typically fall into one of two primary change management styles, Early Adopter and General Availability. With that in mind, we have created a calendar view of our recommended timelines and activities based on those two styles. These timelines include the key dates we shared previously (also included later in this post), but also incorporate our recommendations for how and when to manage the various steps in the change management process.

Change Management Calendar:

Key Dates:

As a reminder, here are the major milestones SafetyChain and our customers will be following throughout the transition to the new mobile app:

  • July 22-31: Customer Beta Testing Period

  • July 31-August 15: M3 Beta App available for continued testing, training and feedback through Test Flight in iOS and Open Testing build in Android

  • August 20-September 13th: SafetyChain App available in Beta for training and change management, deployment prep through the App Store as a full production app

    • Customers that use an MDM will be able to download the Beta app and deploy it and use this time for training and testing before the General Availability app

  • September 16: General Availability. The app can be downloaded and used as your full production app to replace M2.

  • October 15th: Fully transitioned to the new application and no longer using M2

  • November 1: The M2 app will no longer be able to receive updates from SafetyChain or Android and iOS. It will no longer be available in the store for download or through APK files.

  • Final Date being Determined: Users logging into the old M2 application will be prompted to download the new application and will not be able to use the M2 app.

Supporting FAQ:

We know you probably have a lot of lingering questions, so here is a detailed FAQ that we hope will provide further clarity.

What happens if we aren’t using the new application by the October 15th deadline?

This is critical for our customer's security and our Company's security, this is a strict deadline. Starting on November 1st the M2 app will no longer be supported and it will not be available for download from the store. SafetyChain will not be able to publish any fixes and no security patches from Android or iOS will be applied to the app. This deadline applies to all applications that were built on the Xamarin framework, it is not unique to the SafetyChain app and we cannot change it.

Who do I reach out to if we are concerned about the October 15th deadline?

We know you have a lot to manage and may have questions or concerns with this deadline, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your CSM to discuss them.

What happens if some of my users submit records through the M2 app and some through the new SafetyChain App?

We are rolling out the new app with this exact scenario in mind - you can have a phased roll out and review records from M2 and the new app in LINK without a change in experience for the record review and verification processes that follow the record submission from the device.

What is different about this app?

There are several changes to the user experience - all driven to make it more intuitive and easier to train operators on. Check out this walkthrough to see more!

When will the PC app be updated?

The Windows App is built on the UWP framework and will stay in the same app version that it is today. In Q4 we will begin updating the design of the PC App to bring in the customer feedback and intuitive designs from the new app - but it will not require downloading a new app like iOS and Android.

What’s the biggest change to train users on?

We advise paying particular attention to the following changes in layout and behavior:

  • Button placement in form submission screen

  • Landing in Tasks by default when tasks are available

  • Favorites is in the Forms view

  • GS1 barcode scanning allows camera

Do you have to reconfigure SSO?

No, no additional steps will be required to use SSO on the new app!

Will it remember my Favorites?

No, users will need to favorite their forms.

Is there an increase in the bandwidth usage on the app? (usually an MDM customer with an IT team)

The new application will not result in a substantial increase on bandwidth.

Will it just update M2?

No, the M2 app will need to be removed from the devices. SafetyChain App is a brand new application that will need to be installed on all devices.

If I download the Beta app from the store and I already had the Beta app from Test Flight or Open Testing in Android, will I have two Beta apps on my device?

No, the Test Flight app and Open Testing app will be removed when a production app is downloaded, the user will not need to take any action.

If I download the Beta app from the store, will I need to download the GA app from the store when it is released?

The Beta app from the store will stay on the device and be updated when it goes GA. The Beta app from Test Flight and Open Testing will not automatically update, and will be removed.

Will Forms I saved in the M2 version of the app be available to me in the new app?

Yes, as long as the M2 app has been in online state the saved forms will be available.

Good luck with your transition planning and, as always, please reach out to your CSM if you have any questions or concerns!
